Why would someone seek therapy or counseling?
Individuals seek therapy for many different reasons including depression, social anxiety, child rearing issues, substance abuse, career counseling, or simply difficulties dealing with changes in their lives.
How long with therapy last?
There is no required amount of time for therapy. Each situation and patient is different, therefore each case is assessed individually. Upon your first or second visit your therapist will be able to make a suggestion, although it especially depends upon the patient and their desire to reach their individual goals. Each visit will last from 30-45 minutes
What is the difference between a Psychologist or Professional Counselor and Psychiatrist?
Psychologists and Professional Counselors are experts in providing personal therapy to individuals, families and couples to assist them in making personal and behavior changes in their lives. A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor who often specializes in the biological aspects of mental illness and has expertise in medication management.
Can I contact my therapist during an emergency situation?
Our clinical staff is committed to the safety and security of our patients. We offer 24 hour call services. Upon the close of business, patients in crisis are directed to our call service utilizing our main contact number, where calls are screened. At this point, depending on the circumstance, you may be directed to the local emergency room, or your therapist or a colleague will return your call.
How can I get medication?
Medication is provided to patients based on medical necessity and desired outcome. Medication can be prescribed by a Psychiatrist, Nurse Practitioner specializing in Mental Health or your personal physician. If you would like to be assessed for medication needs, we can provide an assessment and make suggestions to your primary care provider, however we do not prescribe medications.
What will happen at my first appointment?
On your first visit you will check in with our receptionist and complete paperwork regarding personal contact information, insurance billing, and confidentiality information. You will then meet with your doctor and provide an initial history and begin to discuss goals and objectives. You will be asked questions to help your doctor understand your goals and you will be able to ask questions yourself. Your initial meeting will last approximately 45 minutes. At the end of your initial meeting, you and your doctor will discuss goals and your return appointment.

What will happen if I have a problem that can’t be treated or addressed at the Carolina Centre?
While the staff at Carolina Centre has tremendous breadth and expertise in their clinical skills, there are problems we encounter from time to time that need to be referred elsewhere for evaluation or treatment. In this case, your doctor will discuss with you the need for referral and together you will decide the next step.
What if I have a spouse, child, family member, or friend that won’t come for treatment or counseling?
This is a relatively commonplace situation that we frequently encounter. There are situations in which improvement can be made without the other party present. In other situations, consulting with a professional that has expertise with the problem may lead to a plan for change or plan to eventually encourage the other party to seek treatment. Do not be discouraged from seeking assistance just because the other party or parties refuse.
